Mr Browne, who previously headed up economic policy for the mayor of London, and is currently the Prime Minister’s Anti-Fraud Champion, said: “I am thrilled to be appointed to this dynamic and challenging brief. Having worked closely with the government and others advocating for local transport projects like the A428 rebuild, I am excited to take on this packed portfolio.

“Electric and autonomous vehicles, active travel, and sustainable practices in aviation and maritime are not just about technology; they’re about improving people’s lives and preserving our environment for future generations.”

Mr Browne, who is taking on his first ministerial role since being elected in 2019, added: “While I am eager to drive forward these national initiatives, my priority remains with the residents of South Cambridgeshire. I assure you that I will continue to be a strong voice for our community, ensuring our local needs and successes shape national policies.”

At the next General Election, due by January 2025, Mr Browne will switch to fight for the new St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire constituency, following boundary changes, meaning another showdown with Liberal Democrat Ian Sollom.

Mr Browne’s current seat of South Cambridgeshire will be contested by Chris Carter-Chapman for the Conservatives, while Pippa Heylings will compete for the Liberal Democrats.
