Start the job hunt in class to stop spiralling benefits bill, MPs say

CHILDREN as young as 12 should be taught how to get a job in a supermarket to stop the spiralling benefits bill, a senior MP has said.

The ex Work and Pensions Secretary said they should explain to kids as young as 12 and 13 how to get jobs when they reach 16.

In a new report by the Centre for Social Justice, he said: “Unless we address some of the underlying questions of how we function as a society, we will merely be kicking the can down the road for the next government to deal with once more.”

In some cases, researchers found young people who were sixth generation unemployed.

The report said: “The CSJ has discovered pockets of the country where a culture of worklessness has become endemic.

“We have held focus groups with young people who are fourth, fifth, and even sixth generation unemployed.

“In places like Grimsby and Birkenhead more than half the population is on out of work benefits.

“The problem in some of these areas is not just systemic but has become cultural.”
