SARANAC LAKE — Playing for the final time at home, the Saranac Lake softball team suffered a 23-11 loss to the Moriah Vikings Wednesday evening in a game that was called off early due to the rain.

With the win, the Vikings split the season series between the two squads at 1-1. The Red Storm, which dropped to 2-11 overall, previously topped Moriah 10-4 on April 27 on the road.

The Vikings’ Lexi Mascarenas had three hits, including an RBI triple in the first inning, while teammate Maddy Gallo had to hits in her team’s eight-hit effort. Amelia Kazlo, Addy Nephew and Emmy Nephew each had one hit.

Moriah jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the first inning and added five runs in the second following an RBI single from Mascarenas and walks with the bases loaded. The Red Storm were unable to respond in the bottom half of the second.

With rain pouring down for most of the contest — causing the softballs to become slippery — walks became a common issue for both team’s pitchers. The two squads combined to give up 29 total walks and a few hit by pitches.

Kylee Meyer took the loss in the pitchers’ circle for Saranac Lake, recording five strikeouts. Emma Akey replaced Meyer in the third inning, earning two strikeouts. Kazlo tossed a complete game for the Vikings and had two strikeouts.

With a 7-1 advantage, Moriah rattled off 14 runs in the third inning, which saw all nine batters reach base at least once. The Vikings also scored two more runs in the fourth to seal the victory.

In the final three innings, Saranac Lake recorded 10 runs, including five in the fourth. During that three inning stretch both Payton Barry and Emily Gay hit a RBI doubles.

Offensively, the Red Storm finished the game with six hits. Barry and Paige Mott had two hits each, while Akey and Emily Gay each chipped in with one hit.

Following the contest, the Red Storm will compete in the playoffs, with their opponent yet to be determined. The team will likely face the top seed in Section VII, Class B on the road. Along with Saranac Lake, Section VII, Class B features AuSable Valley, Northeastern Clinton and Saranac Central.
