With the cost of living crisis still hurting wallets, it’s no surprise that many UK homes are trying to find cheaper ways to tune into premium TV. Over the past few years, there’s been an explosion in illegal streaming with millions now thought to be accessing sports and movies without paying the usual high fees.
This trend hasn’t gone unnoticed by authorities or content providers with UK crackdowns continuing to take down streams and put those who supply the illegal content in jail.
Now there’s another block taking place and it could stop those trying to watch this weekend’s London derby – between Spurs and Arsenal – from tuning in without paying.
It’s been confirmed that a new initiative from BeStreamWise is aiming to stop football fans from watching the match with those clicking on links being shown footage of a stream of water instead.
BeStreamWise, which is a cross-body initiative, says it will be targeting fans searching for live streams on platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit.
The aim is to not only stop people watching illegally but also educate them about the dangers which include downloading malware.
Speaking about this new crackdown, Kieron Sharp, CEO of FACT, said “Illegal streaming not only undermines the hard work of content creators and rights holders but also exposes viewers to significant risks such as identity theft, fraud, and malware.
“By choosing legal streaming options, fans can show their true support for their team. Through this innovative campaign, BeStreamWise aims to protect fans and educate them on the dangers of digital piracy. We want to ensure that everyone can enjoy the excitement of the Spurs vs Arsenal match safely and legally.”
And Matt Hibbert, Group Director of Anti-Piracy at Sky, added “Illegal streaming poses a serious threat and can expose consumers to identity theft, fraud, and malicious software. This campaign protects fans by redirecting them away from malicious streaming sites, highlighting the dangers of clicking unknown links and educating consumers on the risks involved in digital piracy.
“Through our collaboration with BeStreamWise, we want to ensure that football fans continue to enjoy the sport they love without compromising their personal security.”
What are the risks of streaming content illegally?
Although it’s unlikely that you’ll ever be arrested for watching free live streams there are plenty of risks worth knowing before tuning in. Streaming online can increase the chances of receiving malicious software which can then give criminals access to your network or your device compromising your personal data.
Streaming via illegal methods also puts you at risk of being exposed to fraud and data theft. This risk increases significantly when users exchange credit or debit card information to view content on unregulated and illicit websites.
Finally, watching content via an illicit source can expose younger viewers to age-inappropriate content.
