Anthony Gordon is set to be ruled out for Newcastle’s next three games following his straight red against Brighton in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Gordon was given his marching orders in the 83rd minute after a tussle with Jan Paul van Hecke in which he appeared to push the Brighton defender in the head.

Referee Anthony Taylor showed Gordon a straight red card for the daft challenge, with VAR upholding the decision.

Commentating on the game, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson had little sympathy for Gordon, labelling his actions in the lead up to the red card as ‘stupid’.

‘Anthony Gordon has gone over the top of Jan Paul van Hecke,’ Robinson said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

‘Gordon knows he cannot get there and he has run into Van Hecke with two hands. It looked like frustration to me. He has pushed the Brighton defender with force.

‘Petulance. That’s all it was. Gordon felt hard done by that he didn’t get the early penalty. That motion is what the referee has seen. It is stupid from Anthony Gordon.’

What matches will Anthony Gordon miss?

As it was a straight-red card, Gordon is now set to miss Newcastle’s next three games unless Eddie Howe’s side are successful with an appeal.

A three-match ban means Gordon will first miss next Monday’s Premier League clash with West Ham.

However, perhaps most painfully, his suspension means Gordon will be unable to play in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley on March 16.

The Magpies have not won a major domestic trophy since 1955 and came up short in the same competition back in 2023 when they lost 2-0 to Manchester United.

Gordon, who signed from Everton in January 2023, missed the previous final due to being cup-tied and is now set to be watching on from the sidelines again.

The winger will also then miss the league match against Brentford on April 2.

It is the latest bit of bad news for Newcastle who were without full-back Lewis Hall for the cup clash with Brighton due to an ankle injury.

While the severity of the injury is not yet know, the 20-year-old is now surely a doubt for the Carabao Cup final in a fortnight’s time.

And there will also be concern for Alexander Isak who scored from the spot in the first half but limped off in the closing stages of the second half.
