A CITY in the east midlands has been named the country’s nightlife capital thanks to its nightclubs and pubs.
Recent research from Monzo (a digital bank) revealed where Brits spent the most money on nights out in 2023.
The location was unveiled as part of the “Year in Monzo” feature on the digital banking app.
The Year in Monzo is the banking equivalent of Spotify‘s wrapped service.
Instead of sharing music tastes, Monzo revealed the spending habits of its customers – with some surprising results.
Leicester, a city in the east midlands, was named the UK’s top spot for nightlife spending, beating the likes of London, Liverpool, Birmingham, and Manchester to the crown.
A statement on the Monzo website said: “Leicester locals loved going out-out, and spent the most on late-night entertainment.”
And it’s easy to see why punters are parting with their cash at nightclubs and pubs in Leicester.
Mosh is a three-storey nightclub house inside a Gaudi-inspired building in the city, and it sells drinks for just £1 on student nights.
There’s also the underground club called the Basement, which sells happy hour cocktails for £6.
Meanwhile, in Club Republic drinks cost £2.50 on select student nights.
There’s also the Fanclub, which has been open since 1985, and it’s well-known for its retro-themed club nights.
For those visitors who don’t like to paint the town red, then there are plenty of charming and cosy pubs in Leicester too.
One of those is The Globe, which has been pulling pints since 1720, and there’s also The Knight & Garter.
In addition to the pubs in clubs, there are plenty of other attractions in Leicester for tourists, including the National Space Centre.
The National Space Centre was built in 2001, and it is reportedly the only museum in the world to house upright space rockets indoors.
There’s also Leicester Cathedral where the remains of King Richard III can be found – after they were excavated from a car park in Leicester in 2012.
Other attractions include the King Richard III Visitors Centre, and the King Power Stadium.
As well as its long-standing history with King Richard III, Leicester is also the birthplace of plenty of other famous faces, including Gary Linekar, Gok Wan, and Richard Armitage.
Meanwhile, a city in the north of England has been named the country’s culinary capital thanks to its popular food markets and Michelin-Guide restaurants.
According to research from hotel company Accor, Sheffield was crowned the culinary capital of the UK thanks to its food festivals and food markets.
One of the northern city’s culinary events is the Sheffield Food Festival – a large market-style event that celebrates the city’s food and drink scene.
Often-ridiculed town now crowned UK’s most underrated city – that far more tourists should visit.
Meanwhile, this underrated city has three beaches and the cheapest pints in the country.
And this unsung UK destination is home to Gordon Ramsay‘s favourite curry house.
