To improve teaching practices in schools, CBSE to introduce reward system for teachers

With learning gaps increasingly being linked to ineffective teaching practices in schools, CBSE plans to launch an ‘assessment centre’ by June next year to address the challenge with introduction of reward system for teachers in tier-3 cities, reported TOI.

To foster innovation and motivation among educators, CBSE will introduce a reward system for teachers who develop high-quality assessment items. This initiative also seeks to address the challenges faced by teachers in Tier-3 cities, where salaries are often limited between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000.

Studies such as the National Achievement Survey by the Ministry of Education, the Annual Status of Education Report, and CBSE’s Structured Assessment for Analysing Learning all point to a common conclusion: the root cause of unsatisfactory teaching in schools lies with the teachers themselves. These reports consistently highlight significant learning gaps, where board exam scores fail to reflect actual skills, and note an increasing dependence on external help like private tuition or coaching.

CBSE chairperson Rahul Singh, speaking about a new initiative aimed at addressing these issues, emphasized that the way assessments are designed directly influences teaching methods. The initiative, which will impact 15 lakh CBSE teachers and potentially support educators from state boards, aims to address these concerns by helping teachers create more effective assessments.

The proposed assessment centre will equip educators with advanced tools for developing question papers, administering assessments, scanning responses, and tracking student progress. Teachers will have personalized pages on the platform, allowing them to design assessment items of varying difficulty to evaluate a wide range of student competencies.

One of the initiative’s primary goals is to foster a healthy sense of competition in classrooms. To ensure the assessments contribute to improved teaching practices, teachers will receive training on using these new tools effectively. Additionally, these assessment resources, including question paper creation tools and tracking systems, will be available free of charge to teachers from other educational boards.(with ToI inputs)
