A CAR-BUYING expert has revealed his list of the top ten “fast, fun, and exciting” automobiles currently available for less than £5,000.

YouTuber Jonny Brighton said each of the cheap cars had “insane performance” and buyers would be hard pressed finding better deals.

Coming in at number 10 in his list of the cheapest “fast saloons”, was the Lexus IS 250, which Jonny said is “not hugely quick mostly because it’s quite heavy” but is “not too bad”.

He said: “It’s pretty comfortable all in, with decent build quality too, given it’s a Lexus.

“They’ll run you around £1.7k at the bottom end and $5,000 will get you a 2008 model with around 100,000km on it.”

Number nine was the only Swedish car on his list, the Volvo S60 T5, “which is one of the coolest engines you can get for under £5k”.

Jonny said the car has sporty features but is “not actually that quick in real terms”, although it does have great safety systems and is “generally reliable”.

He explained: “For a car that was first released in 2000, it was years ahead of its competitors when it came to looking after occupants in the event of a crash.

“They’ll run you around £4,000 at the bottom end and £5,000 is enough for a 2007 model with 50,000km on it.”

The eighth car he recommended was the Skoda Octavia VRS, which is listed as a hatchback but is “pretty saloon-looking”.

These cars can be purchased for between about £1,800 and £5,000.

Or the Alfa Romeo 159 JTS, with a “super nice” classic and Italian interior, can be purchased for about £4,500.

Jonny also recommended the Honda Accord Type R car, which he said was “slightly rarer and probably slightly cooler” than others like it on the market.

He said: “This car only ran from 1998 to 2002, based on the CH1 Accord, and was exclusively available in Europe.

“In total, just under 2,000 were built.

“I think of all the cars on this list, this might be one of the coolest, if only because of the rarity value.”

He admitted they are harder to come by, but he did find one for sale on Gumtree for less than £5,000.

Fifth on his list, was the Maxda6 MPS, which has an interesting-looking exterior and an interior with “some cool options” like integrated Bose speakers.

Jonny said: “To get into one of these, you’ll need to spend around £3,500 while £5,000 gets you a 2006 model with around 85,000km on it.”

The one fast luxury saloon on his list was the Mercedes S500, which he said were used for “ferrying execs around in the early 2000s”.

He added: “Yes, it’s still a pretty old car, given it came out in 1999, but it was still ahead of its time.”

Such cars can be purchased online for between about £2,500 and £4,000.

But his top three cars, all of which reach speeds of 60 in under six seconds, start with the BMW 330I E90.

Jonny said: “Aesthetically it looks cooler and regardless you get an interior that I personally think has aged really well, and a car more reliable than the E90s above it in the range.”

It costs about £1,900 at the bottom end and up to £5,000 for a 2008 model with 90,000km on the odometer.

The Audi S4, “a properly cool old-school super saloon”, can reach a speed of 60 in 5.4 seconds which Jonny said is “a lot of performance for the money“.

He continued: “This third-gen S4 is a proper super saloon for its time with an engine leading the charge.”

Jonny claimed £4,500 was enough to get your hands on one of the cars, and £5,000 would get you a 2003 model that had done 90,000km.

Taking the top position was the Jaguar S-type R, which Jonny said “genuinely offers ridiculous performance for our price range” and can get to a speed of 60 in 5.3 seconds.

Drivers should be able to buy the car for just over £4,000 or £5,000 for a 2002 model with around 100,000 miles on the clock.

Jonny said: “I’ve always thought they look insanely cool, with the … tastefully-modified exterior and the built-in fog lamps, alongside the more performance-focused features as well.”
