On August 2, 2024, the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (the “ICO”) issued a statement confirming that it has identified 11 social media and video sharing platforms that must improve their children’s privacy practices. As part of the ICO’s Children’s Code Strategy, the ICO has reviewed 34 social media and video sharing platforms, identifying varying levels of adherence to the Children’s Code. Issues were identified in a number of areas, including default privacy settings, geolocation, age assurance, and behavioral advertising.
In the statement, the ICO also announced that it has launched a call for evidence related to the
Children’s Code, which will invite stakeholders and interested organizations to share their views and further evidence on the use of children’s information in recommender systems and the use of personal information of children under 13. This consultation closes on October 11, 2024.
