Unai Emery has called for ‘respect’ from Newcastle United assistant Jason Tindall after he was sent off during his side’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

Newcastle sealed their victory and have moved up to fifth in the Premier League with goals from Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and Joelinton at St James’ Park.

Villa were furious after Jhon Duran was sent off for what was deemed an intentional stamp on Fabian Schar by referee Anthony Taylor.

Tempers flared on the touchline and at one stage, Tindall was seen making a shushing gesture towards an irate Emery.

Newcastle’s assistant was then sent off following a half-time bust-up between the two sides. Victor Manas, an analyst for Villa, was also dismissed after the altercation.

When asked if he saw the incident after the game, Emery replied: ‘I don’t know.’

But when Tindall’s name was referenced in the follow-up question, Emery replied: ‘Respect always.’

Emery also confirmed that Villa are planning to appeal Duran’s red card.

‘Of course. Three matches because of this red card is hard to accept. You can watch the video, the foot was not clear,’ Emery said.

‘Three matches now out, maybe it is because it is Jhon Duran. We are trying to teach him and get of him as well a good way and he is doing this effort.

‘He is doing the way we are trying to get of him. The referees have to be fair as well, taking time with the decision.

‘Yes, it is a reputation. Clearly. He was saying so quick, ‘sorry, sorry’. He had no intention in that action to kick him.’

In a separate interview with Amazon prime, Emery added: ‘Always I am supporting VAR but you have to use VAR.

‘Today the red card was clear for the referee straight away, he was the only person in the stadium who couldn’t take his time. He has to be intelligent to take time and get the right decision.

‘In this case you have to use the VAR. He has to be smart, and calm. It has to be like that.

‘The red card more or less kills the game, it changes it completely.’
