Sky is hoping to beam faster speeds into more homes thanks to a new deal that could give its rivals a serious headache. Right now, Sky supplies customers across the UK with internet access via BT’s Openreach network but the provider is now joining forces with CityFibre as well. This partnership could see a further 3.8 million customers getting access to Sky’s best FTTP speeds which are capable of whizzing the web around rooms at speeds in excess of 900Mbps.
For those unaware, Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) technology brings improved cables right through the walls rather than relying on much older copper wires that dangle above the streets of Britain.
FTTP can deliver broadband at over 1Gbps – at that rapid rate, a full HD video could be downloaded in under 40 seconds.
Sky says that this upgrade is expected to be available on CityFibre’s full-fibre network from next year. Longer term, this will include over 1.3 million homes in hard-to-reach areas through CityFibre’s extensive participation in the Government’s Project Gigabit Programme.
Speaking about the news, Amber Pine, Managing Director of Connectivity, said: “Sky’s new partnership with CityFibre will mean we can provide fast, reliable and great value broadband to more homes across the UK. This will mean we are able to reach even more people with full fibre, which is essential for the modern home.”
And Greg Mesch, CEO at CityFibre added: “This partnership with Sky is a huge vote of confidence in our business and has cemented CityFibre’s position as the UK’s third digital infrastructure platform. With demand for digital connectivity continuing to grow, CityFibre’s network can provide the quality and reliability that people need and the infrastructure competition the UK deserves.”
Sky will continue to use Openreach alongside this new service but the CityFibre boost should mean more homes wanting to use Sky as their Internet Service Provider (ISP) will soon get access to improved downloads.
What speeds do you really need?
A single person who simply wants to send a few emails and stream the odd show on Netflix shouldn’t need anything more than a 30Mbps connection.
However, a house full of gadgets with people trying to stream in 4K, download games and make Zoom calls will need much faster speeds.
A busy family that doesn’t want a sluggish connection should look at upgrading to at least 200Mbps or faster. 1Gbps downloads are best for gamers, those downloading loads of 4K videos and people who work or study from home have have endless connected devices.
Don’t forget, the faster the download speeds, the more you will pay.
