Why you should never chew gum on a flight – even to make your ears pop

Settling down to relax on a flight can be incredibly difficult at the best of times, but the food and snacks you eat can make it even worse.

Ryan Davidson from Raw Juicery explained why one well-loved plane trick should be avoided.

He said: “If you have been on a plane for hours, there is a good chance that your breath isn’t as fresh as you’re used to.

“While it’s tempting to pop in chewing gum, it’s not advisable, as it can lead to further bloating.

“The pressurisation of the cabin means that we are already at more risk of passing gas in the plane.

“Chewing gum can increase the risk of bloating and extra gas as you open your mouth when chewing and swallow more air.

“The artificial sweeteners in gum can also increase your chances of excess gas too.”

Passengers who use chewing gum to improve airplane ear symptoms and counteract pressure inside the cabin, may want to try using a mint instead.

Ryan also advised passengers to avoid eating apples before their next flight.

He added: “As a snack, apples are a great choice. They’re a fruit that supports brain & heart health and should be a part of a balanced diet.

“But in the 24 hours leading up to a flight, you’ll want to avoid them, as the 4-5 grams of fibre per serving can lead to a bloated stomach when flying.”

Flight attendants have also discussed the other types of food and drink people should avoid when they get on planes.

Cabin crew member Whytney, who works for a major US airline, recommends skipping salty foods.

This is because overly-processed foods, or those too high in sodium, may lead to dehydration-related headaches, constipation, or fatigue.

She said: “Pasta and soups are usually high in sodium.

“Also some Indian meals fall in the category because they have no meat but a higher salt content.

“Any kind of sandwich with deli meat inside of it probably has higher levels of salt as well.”

Meanwhile, one passenger was slammed for eating smelly eggs while waiting for a flight.

And we’ve rounded up the worst plane meals passengers have been served on planes.
